Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her grandmother and mother. The only child she has. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating her school, she went to Temple University. She studied secondary education over the course of two years while also working. She hoped to become a teacher of English at a secondary school. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. Following her first gigs performing at live poetry performances She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. In a Roots performance, she announced herself as a musician. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first signing artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
